“Child labor is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential, and their dignity and that is harmful to physical and mental development.”
In India, child labor is very high as it is a developing country, there is no much of independence to these kids alone. UNICEF is an organization that takes care of such issues. It defines child labor as work that exceeds a minimum number of hours, depending on the age of a child and on the type of work. Such work is considered harmful to the child and should there be eliminated:
• Ages 5-11: At least one hour of economic work or 28 hours of domestic work per week.
• Ages 12-14: At least 14 hours of economic work or 28 hours of domestic work per week.
• Ages 15-17: At least 43 hours of economic or domestic work per week."
The child workers are indulged in works such as mining, Cottonseed production, Zari and Embroidery Industry, etc. The major cause of child labor is illiteracy and poverty. In India when we consider the percentage ratio of illiterate child laborers are
Rajasthan, Jharkhand 40%
Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh 38%
The most common age groups involved in work are 5 to 18 years. Based on ILO calculation and data around 168 million children work in some form of labor; India stands in 17th position among the countries in the world. 1.4 million children are unaware of writing their own names in India.
In spite of announcing free education and meal either free of cost or at low rates, children are prohibited from studies. Even they are in a situation that they had to work for their family sacrificing their studies. The children work for at least 6 months in a year. According to the 2011 data, among 11 kids in a society 1 kids are involved in the work. Also, this 2011 data reveals 10.13 million child workers are seen in India. In spite of strict laws such as Article 32 are present, child workers are still in demand in many places. Many underdeveloped regions in India are still forcing their children to work.
Laws that are passed over the anti-child labor is not much effective or not implemented properly. Neither the judicial systems are strictly following nor caring on making it a mandatory rule.
In certain places, there are bonds for these child workers and they are to abide for those many years and do as per the order passed. There are a number of sexual assault cases, mental tortures, physical abuse, and low wages. The money they take home in a day is not even in hundreds nowadays. These bonded children are many times from the background of migrant workers or debt from their parents mostly from agriculture family or low caste groups.
In recent times the opposition for this child labor is high and adopts Zero tolerance. There are many organizations who are lending their hands to help them out and try their level best to oppose or eradicate.
Muskans’ triumph and favor:
• Parents, Panchayats, government bodies, and decision makers are being greatly convinced to “STOP” such activities.
• Support children engaged in child labor in all possible ways and abide to rules.
• Strive hard to bring them up in educational backgrounds and physical strength.
• Eager to partner with many other organisations, individuals, great people and bring up such kids.
